Tangyuan (Glutinous Rice Flour Balls) in Sweet Ginger Syrup...
Tangyuan, as the unique name it has, is a famous Chinese dessert. Tangyuan are little round dumplings, made from glutinous rice flour. They are formed into small balls and cooked in boiling water prior to adding in sweet ginger syrup or just sweet broth. Some prefer to fill the balls with sesame paste, red bean paste or peanut paste. Some prefer unfilled, just plain balls. I belong to the latter! So do my Mum...she'd always tell me that this is her favourite dessert.
I love colorful unfilled Tangyuan. Some calls it Rainbow Tangyuan.
To make the balls, you will need glutinous rice flour and sufficient water. Add food colorings to make them attractive. Knead together and form small balls. You may also add little oil while kneading.
Boil water in a large pot. Add in the balls and cook until the balls float. Strain the balls and set aside.
There are few more ways, just google them ;)
Now, to tell you frankly, I'm little lazy to make these balls all myself. Unless there's a helping hand, I wouldn't mind rolling it. But why need to worry when there's ready made Tangyuan available in the store?
I found my favourite brand, KG Pastry's Mini Rainbow Rice Ball (Tangyuan), 320gm in Tesco. Lucky me, it's the plain type. They do sell the filled ones too. Can't remember what fillings though, lol!
Alright, let me share with you on how I made the Sweet Ginger Syrup. It's my kinda broth which I can just finish off in seconds. You can even drink it just like that, truly refreshing.
Firstly, I boiled some water and cooked the ready made glutinous rice balls until they float.
Next, I prepared the syrup. Here's how.
SWEET GINGER SYRUP
- 1.5 litres of water
- 130gm granulated sugar (you may use rock sugar or palm sugar too)
- 50gm ginger ~ thinly sliced
- 1 inch long cinnamon stick
- 1 pc lemongrass ~ slightly bruised
- 2 pandan leaves (screwpine) ~ knotted
- Put all ingredients in a large pot.
- Cook and boil a few times.
- Check for sweetness.
- Gently add in the cooked glutinous rice balls.
- Mix and turn off the heat.
- Serve warm.

I remember helping my grandparents roll the little balls when I was a kid. I used to be naughty and made multi-coloured balls. I like eating the tang yuan, nice and chewy with the gingery syrup.ReplyDelete
